10 step makeup routine

my daily 10 step makeup routine …

because a 1 step or 3 step routine doesn’t exist for me!

I have been wearing makeup since my freshman year in high school. i wear makeup every day (as my husband says even when i’m sick). I can probably count on one hand (slight exaggeration) the number of days i have gone with no makeup. My makeup routine is a daily habit.

makeup is part of my morning routine (I don’t skip putting on makeup… like ever). it’s part of something bigger. it’s not just putting on makeup. it’s about putting on makeup while listening to my favorite faith, leadership, business or self improvement podcasts. it’s part of the things i do in the morning to get my body, mind and spirit ready,.

what you’ll learn from this blog:

  • the 10 steps i take (from foundation to lipstick)

  • product recommendations along the way (the best long wearing makeup that can survive even a texas summer )

  • little tips you can try today

If you are currently a one step or three step makeup routine person. you are probably like 10 steps!!!??? ahhhh! as you are reading this blog please just take one next step. maybe just add bronzer to your routine (can’t go without that). take things slow. build your routine little by little. always making it work for you. no comparisons. no judgements. I’m here to share what works for me (today). In my younger years (it didn’t take me ten steps, it was more like foundation + mascara = done).

about the products i recommend…in california(where i lived for 29 years) everyday was a good hair and a good makeup day…living in texas is a different story because of the extreme weather. i think doing a makeup wear test during a texas summer is the BEST performance indicator. I work, clean, cook, swim, sweat, walk, clean some more, cook again, play outside and my makeup is still ON. Therefore, these products have passed my texas summer wear test.

best full coverage

foundation:

catrice hd liquid coverage.

reasons i love it: covers up all my imperfections. water and sweat proof. lasts all day. matte finish (i have only skin). btw catrice has a foundation for dry skin called true skin hydrating foundation. $10 but it performs like a $40 foundation.

2nd best full coverage foundation:

L’Oreal Paris Infallible 24hr fresh wear foundation with spf 25

reasons i love it: full coverage yet lightweight. lasts all day. sweat-resistant. matte finish. $14

i have undereye dark circles, so i use concealer to help them out. i was at sephora and this fenty concealer caught my eye. I normally like to stay away higher end makeup bc of cost. but this concealer is so worth the $30.

best concealer:

fenty beauty pro filt’r instant retouch concealer

reasons i love it: full coverage yet lightweight. buildable coverage. long lasting. doesn’t crease. doesn’t breakup.

the necessary step

to ensure your foundation lasts all day!

once i learned to set my foundation….complete game changer! i will never wear just foundation alone. foundation + setting powder = better together.

best setting powder:

fenty beauty pro filt’r retouch setting powder. $36

reasons i love it: locks in foundation. loose and sheer powder. gives me a flawless filter look. mattifying.

2nd best setting powder:

maybelline fit me loose powder

reasons i love it: locks in foundation. controls my shine. matte finish. smooths texture on my skin. only $9!

tip: since the maybelline powder is so cheap. I like to buy two shades. one shade to set my face and one shade to set my undereyes (I use a lighter shade to create a brighter eye look).

after foundation my face is plain…blah… bronzer provides definition (contouring), depth, warmth and a sunkissed glow. I’m currently using a colourpop bronzer and it’s okay i just bought it to get free shipping.

all time favorite bronzer:

Physicians Formula butter bronzer

reasons i love it: gives a tropical (i just back from vacation) glow. blends easily. comes in different shades of tan. only $13.49 at target.

i love blush and sometimes i put on too much and i’m just fine with that. blush is easy to shop, i don’t notice too much difference between brand formulas. i just make sure to stick to colors that look good on my skin tone (shades of rose)

current blush: e.l.f. primer-infused blush in always rosy

reasons i love it: long lasting. good pigmentation. easy to blend. the color is beautiful. year round use. only $7 at target.

what do i buy most frequently (like every 3 months)? eyeshadow palettes! I prefer shades of mocha, shimmers, and glitters.

current palette: milani gilded mini eyeshadow palette

reasons i love it: colors last all day. blendable. great pigmentation. the price…$8.99 at target.

tip: you can use eyeshadow to fill in your eyebrows. I use eyeshadow to fill in my eyebrows on days i know i’ll be in the water (pool days and water park days)! it lasts too!

tip #2: remember to always tap your eyeshadow. what does this mean? after you grab eyeshadow using a brush tap the brush two times on your wrist. this will release any excess eyeshadow, thus preventing fallout.

One day I was talking to my some ladies about nightmares… i shared my nightmare was to show up to work without eyebrows.lol.

current brow pomade: benefit cosmetics powmade waterproof brow.

reasons i love it: easy to sculpt and defines my brows. lasts all day. waterproof and sweatproof. $23

i always put my setting spray before my mascara because sometimes setting spray causes my mascara to smear.

best setting spray:

e.l.f. stay all night blue light micro-setting mist.

reasons i love it: locks in all the previous steps. lightweight. matte finish. keeps my shine down. $10.

tip: if you skip setting spray you’ll be fine… i’ve tried it and my makeup was fine, it still stayed on… no big deal. it’s more of a habit for me to use setting spray.

best mascara:

l’oreal paris telescopic original washable mascara

reasons i love it: the BEST applicator brush (love it so much). doesn’t clump. lengthens. great for upper and lower lashes. flake free. buildable.

best waterproof mascara:

l’oreal paris voluminous lash paradise mascara

reasons i love it: doesn’t clump or smudge. long lasting. adds length and volume.

eyelash curler: wet n wild high on lash eyelash curler

how to remove waterproof mascara tip: use good quality coconut oil. add a small amount of coconut oil to a puff or cotton ball. follow with favorite cleanser.

tip: build mascara up. i always use 3 coats of it. makes a big difference!

the final step that completes the look!

best lipstick:

maybelline super stay vinyl ink liquid lipstick

reasons i love it: the color options! long lasting. the lip applicator!

tip: purchase two lipsticks, one to keep with your makeup inside the home and one to keep in your purse for reapplication after a meal.

in lipstick, i stay away from anything matte. I stay with nudes and pinks.

these are all my brushes. nothing fancy or expensive just use useful sizes.

i use puffs to apply foundation, concealer and setting powder. . I love puffs because i dap and press on my foundation and powder. this application technique leaves me with a smooth finish.

best puffs:

1.beautyblender power pocket puff dual sided makeup sponge (for foundation) $18

2. e.l.f halo glow powder puff (for setting powder) $4

i have recently started experimenting with applying a small amount of concealer before my foundation to help my dark spots (sun damage). I am still deciding if this extra step is helpful.

great concealer: catrice true skin high cover concealer. $7!

I used to apply primer every single day because you are suppose to right? well, I haven’t been applying it for months and guess what my makeup still stays on without it!

best primer though: e.l.f. power grip primer. $10
